Do Runners Make Better Lovers?

Runners make better lovers is an urban legend phrase that’s nowhere near as popular as ‘dancers are good in bed.’ With the year’s run calendar drawing to a close, it’s time to put some facts behind the claims!

Do Runners Make Better Lovers?

Simply put: yes. I admit that there is some bias to this audacious claim but with the following reasons, the argument stands.

Runners Know How to Avoid Boredom

The fear in every relationship as far as I know is for one to end up ‘bored’ of the other. While not necessarily physical, the prolonged exposure to each other may cause complacent behavior, leading to suspicions that one isn’t interested anymore. See, this ‘boredom’ thing isn’t likely to happen for runners. A serious runner’s mind is prepared and conditioned for long lulls of inactivity – the sort that sometimes occurs in long-term relationships. Instead of being bored, runners know how to find something interesting in the most mundane tasks; I remember clearly counting branches of a faraway tree during a 26km training run!

Runners Commit for the Long Haul

No self-respecting runner would sign up for a half-marathon, a full marathon, or an ultramarathon without intending to run it to the finish line. For example, with half-marathons averaging finish times of three hours here in the Philippines, it’s a pretty long way to go. A runner would not commit himself/herself to a long-distance race without first putting in the effort to eat better, the training hours to log the miles, and the mindset to go through the challenge no matter the bumps along the way. With this kind of mental conditioning, runners who commit to someone are most probably in it all the way to the faraway finish line!

Runners are Some of the Fittest People in the World

Runners make better lovers simply because they can love longer. This isn’t a pun on private activities; running is one of the few sports in the world where senior citizens still regularly compete. I know marathoners past the age of seventy, fitter than men in their 20s. Running is one of the best activities for healthy muscles (primarily the heart), joints, core, and sense of balance. The training to run long distances have also conditioned our bodies to be tough, and the release of good hormones keep us happier and give runners regular mood lifts. Runners aren’t just physically healthier and longer living – they are mentally fitter and more cheerful too.

Are you now thinking of taking up running? I highly recommend it! Do share your thoughts on running in the comments, whether or not your think runners make better lovers! Also, please share this if you found it entertaining!
